One of the most important factors to consider in roofing is the temperature. At Great Roofing & Restoration, we prioritize quality and long-lasting results, which is why we don’t re-roof if the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. But why is that the magic number? Let’s break it down!
Why 40 Degrees?
Shingles are designed to be flexible and create a watertight seal when they adhere properly. However, when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, shingles become stiff and brittle, making them difficult to work with and prone to cracking. This can lead to improper installation, leaks, and costly repairs down the road.
Additionally, the adhesive strips on shingles require warmth to activate and properly seal. In colder temperatures, they won’t bond correctly, leaving your roof vulnerable to wind damage.
It’s Not Just Our Policy – It’s the Manufacturer’s Guideline
It’s important to note that this isn’t just our rule—it’s also recommended by shingle manufacturers. Most manufacturers specify in their installation guidelines that shingles should not be installed in temperatures below 40 degrees. Ignoring this can void warranties and compromise the lifespan of your roof.
Beware of Contractors Who Ignore the Temperature
If a contractor suggests re-roofing when it’s too cold or schedules your roof to be installed during freezing temperatures, be cautious. Cutting corners in low temperatures may save them time and make them quick money, but it certainly could cost you in the long run. A roof installed in the wrong conditions will likely not last as long or protect your home as effectively.
At Great Roofing & Restoration, we refuse to compromise on quality. We know it can be inconvenient to have your project pushed back, but waiting for temperatures to be consistently above 40 degrees ensures every roof we install is built to last.

What Can Be Done in Colder Temperatures?
Just because it’s too cold to install a new roof doesn’t mean progress has to stop! There are still important steps we can take to keep your project moving forward:
- Drone Inspections – We can safely and thoroughly inspect your roof using a drone, identifying issues without the risks of icy surfaces and causing damage to your roof.
- Material Selection & Ordering – This is a great time to finalize your roofing choices if you haven’t done so, ensuring that everything is ready to go once the weather warms up.
- Insurance Claims Process – If your roof replacement involves an insurance claim, that process can take time. We are happy to help you understand and navigate the process, ensuring you have the knowledge and resources to advocate for your home.
- Project Planning – We’ll make sure all necessary materials, permits, and schedules are in place so that when temperatures rise, your project can move forward without delay.
At Great Roofing & Restoration, we work year-round to ensure your roofing project is handled efficiently and professionally—no matter the season.
